"The announcement of the scheme is brilliant news and I welcome the statement enormously, and particularly the parts on the inclusion of Government debt in the scheme. Written Question
Stamp Duties
Tuesday 17th July 2018

Asked by: Heidi Allen (Liberal Democrat - South Cambridgeshire)

Question to the HM Treasury:

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, if he will take steps to make stamp duty payable on the portion of a property that each person owns according to their tax status in the next Budget.

Answered by Mel Stride - Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer

The Government reformed Stamp Duty Land Tax on residential properties at Autumn Statement 2014, cutting the tax for 98% of people who pay it, unless they are purchasing additional property.

The Government’s priority is to support first-time buyers. At the 2017 Autumn Budget, the Government removed SDLT for all first-time buyers purchasing properties up to £300,000, with the relief also extending to purchases worth up to £500,000. These changes will help over one million households over the next 5 years.

Taxation (Cross-border Trade) Bill

Leaving the EU: Customs Arrangements

"On that point, it is important for everyone to recognise that although big businesses can be noisy and have press contacts, the way that business filters through like a food chain means that they provide work for medium-sized businesses, who provide work for small businesses. As a country, we would …..."

Leaving the EU: Customs Arrangements

"The hon. Gentleman is right that a 52% to 48% result has to look like a compromise that the whole country and Parliament can somehow find a way to get behind, so does he agree that the Prime Minister’s outline proposals from Chequers go some way towards that? They would …..."
