Written Question
Cars: Export Duties
Wednesday 16th January 2019

Asked by: Jim Shannon (Democratic Unionist Party - Strangford)

Question to the Department for Exiting the European Union :

To ask the Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union, in the event of the UK leaving the EU without a deal how much the tariff at World Trade Organisation rates would be on exporting a car made in the UK to the EU (a) valued at £15,000 and (b) valued at £25,000 at the point of export.

Answered by Chris Heaton-Harris

The EU and the UK are committed to an arrangement with no tariffs between the UK and the EU. However, in the event of the UK leaving the EU without a deal, goods traded between the UK and the EU will be subject to the same requirements as third country goods, including the payment of duty. For UK exports to the EU, the EU will require payment of customs duty at the rate under the EU’s Common Customs Tariff (CCT). Full details are available on the EU’s website (http://madb.europa.eu/madb/euTariffs.htm).

The current third country duty on most types of motor vehicles is 10%, therefore the tariffs would likely be £1,500 for (a) and £2,500 for (b). However, more information is needed on the vehicles in question to provide an exact answer. Furthermore, the EU may change these rates between now and March 2019.
