Written Question
Operation Blue Star
Tuesday 6th December 2016

Asked by: John Nicolson (Scottish National Party - Ochil and South Perthshire)

Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what the nature and content is of the files removed from the National Archive relating to the events of June 1984 at the Golden Temple at Amritsar.

Answered by Alan Duncan

Following concerns raised with ministers by the Sikh Federation UK (SFUK), the FCO re-examined its 1984 files from the National Archives to check whether they contained evidence to support the SFUK claims. The FCO found nothing to substantiate the SFUK concerns in these files, which have since been returned to the National Archives.

"That was certainly not the Foreign Secretary at his most sophisticated.

This debate should not be about appeasing troublesome Eurosceptics in the Tory ranks, or about establishing who the next leader of the Conservative Party will be. It is a debate about how we in these islands see ourselves, how …..."
