Levelling Up
"I thank the Secretary of State for his statement. He announced a county devolution deal for County Durham, which has lost £224 million in Government grants since 2010. At the same time, his own county council’s spending powers have gone up. Will the devolution deal replace anywhere near the £22.4 …..."Lord Beamish - View Speech

Fire Safety: Retirement Communities
"I am pleased that I have been able to secure this debate tonight. The impact of fire on any property can be devastating, but the risks are increased when it comes to fires in retirement communities, due to the vulnerability and dependency of the residents who reside in them. While …..."Lord Beamish - View Speech

Fire Safety: Retirement Communities
"I very much agree and will come to some of what the Government must do. Local fire boards and fire brigades will need extra enforcement powers.
I expected McCarthy & Stone, as the builder of the retirement community, to show an interest in rectifying its possible mistakes. I believed—foolishly—that it …..."Lord Beamish - View Speech

Fire Safety: Retirement Communities
"I agree. These people are on fixed incomes and cannot just lay their hands on this type of money.
Let’s get this in perspective. Before its £647 million buy-out by private equity in February, McCarthy & Stone was listed on the FTSE 250. It handed out multimillion-pound bonuses in 2019. …..."Lord Beamish - View Speech

Fire Safety: Retirement Communities
"I welcome what the Minister is saying about the future. I just wonder what can be done to ensure that not just Cestrian Court but other properties are safe. If Cestrian Court was built by McCarthy and Stone to the shoddy standards that left my constituents in peril, is there …..."Lord Beamish - View Speech

Written Question
Friday 25th June 2021
Asked by:
Lord Beamish (Labour - Life peer)
Question
to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government:
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what plans he has to deploy UK Shared Prosperity Fund funding in the North East.
Answered by Luke Hall
The UK Shared Prosperity Fund will help to level up and create opportunity across the UK in places most in need, such as ex-industrial areas, deprived towns and rural and coastal communities, and for people who face labour market barriers.
The November 2020 Spending Review set out the main strategic elements of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in the Heads of Terms. The Government will publish a UK-wide investment framework later this year and confirm funding profiles at the next Spending Review.
In addition, to help local areas prepare over 21/22 for the introduction of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, we are providing additional UK funding through the UK Community Renewal Fund to support our communities to pilot programmes and new approaches.

Post Office Update
"I thank the Minister for his statement. I also give him credit: in the 10-plus years that I, the hon. Member for North West Leicestershire (Andrew Bridgen) and Lord Arbuthnot have been campaigning on this issue, this is the first time that a Minister has admitted that when things go …..."Lord Beamish - View Speech

Post Office Court of Appeal Judgment
"The Minister said that this was a landmark judgment; I just wonder what it is going to take for the Government actually to take action. People’s lives were ruined. People went to prison. People took their own lives. Surely the way forward now is, first, for the Government to put …..."Lord Beamish - View Speech

Written Question

Question
to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government:
To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, whether he has plans to protect from eviction people who reside on caravan sites, within holiday parks the licences for which may expire.
Answered by Christopher Pincher
The moratorium on evictions only applies to residential caravan sites. It does not apply to caravan sites with planning permission for holiday use.
During this period of national lockdown, accommodation providers including holiday caravan parks, must close. However, there are a number of exemptions that allow businesses to remain open, including where households are using this accommodation as their main residence.
Where sites have to close because planning conditions require them to do so, we encourage site owners to work with their respective local authorities to plan for any possible impacts the closure might have.
