I am proud of the leadership role that the UK has played on tackling violence against women and children worldwide, and it will continue to be a key priority for my Department. We have increased programmes that tackle violence against women and girls by 63% in the past two years, and now support 103 programmes in 29 countries.

Question to the Department for International Development:
To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what steps she is taking to help end violence against girls in developing countries; and if she will make a statement.
Answered by Justine Greening
The UK is at the forefront of efforts to tackle violence against women and girls. DFID has targeted programmes in over 20 DFID priority countries and continues to scale up work on violence against women and girls, as well as integrating the issue across other sector-specific programmes.
In July 2014, the Prime Minister hosted Girl Summit 2014, alongside UNICEF, to galvanise action to end female genital mutilation and child, early and forced marriage in a generation.

Question to the Department for International Development:
To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what assistance her Department is giving to (a) Sierra Leone and (b) other countries in West Africa to them help counter the outbreak of Ebola; and if she will make a statement.
Answered by Baroness Featherstone
The current outbreak of Ebola poses a serious public health risk to West Africa and is deeply concerning. The UK is taking a leading role in working with the countries affected and with the international community to ensure that the outbreak is contained and help reaches those in need. In total, over £25 million of British funding is supporting the global effort to contain this disease. This includes £5 million of new direct funding to help partners working on the ground like the WHO, Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières to treat victims and prevent the spread of Ebola. Given the UK’s historical relationship with Sierra Leone, the majority of UK direct funding is supporting the response in that country. Overall £20 million of UK support is helping contain Ebola across West Africa through commitments to multilateral institutions (the World Bank and the African Development Bank) and the EU.
