Asked by: Layla Moran (Liberal Democrat - Oxford West and Abingdon)

Question to the Cabinet Office:

To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office, what estimate the Government has made of the cost to the public purse of (a) billboards and (b) other physical advertisements on how the public should prepare for the UK leaving the EU.

Answered by David Lidington

The Cabinet Office is leading and coordinating the cross-departmental Prepare for EU Exit public information campaign to help fulfil the Government’s duty to inform citizens and businesses about how leaving the EU might affect them, and to advise them on the steps they may need to take to prepare. In the coming weeks and months, we plan to use a range of paid-for and no-cost channels to direct citizens and businesses to a dedicated area on GOV.UK at Gov.uk/euexit.

The Cabinet Office has undertaken to publish information relating to ongoing expenditure on the public information campaign as part of the department’s regular data transparency releases. The latest release (https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cabinet-office-spend-data) showed that as of 31 December 2018, expenditure relating to this campaign totalled £300,000. In conjunction, Cabinet Office will disclose full costs regarding the Out of Home advertising strand as part of these data sets in due course.

Written Question
Cabinet Office: Brexit
Thursday 24th January 2019

Asked by: Layla Moran (Liberal Democrat - Oxford West and Abingdon)

Question to the Cabinet Office:

To ask the Minister for the Cabinet Office, what estimate he has made of the cost to the public purse of ministerial visits by his Department to discuss the withdrawal agreement from 3 to 10 December; and if he will place the itineraries of those visits in the Library before the Christmas recess.

Answered by David Lidington

The Ministerial Code is clear that Ministers must always make efficient and cost-effective travel arrangements.

Details of Ministers’ travel overseas are published quarterly and are made available on GOV.UK. The details include the purpose of the trip and the total cost for the Minister.

While destinations and costs for travel internal to the UK are not part of the quarterly transparency returns, details of Ministerial meetings with external organisations and the purpose of the meeting are published quarterly and are made available on GOV.UK. This naturally includes all meetings with external organisations that take place while a Minister is travelling within the UK.

Answered by Baroness May of Maidenhead

As I said in my answer to the Hon Member during my statement on December European Council (Column 552, 17 December 2018), the former Prime Minister is not giving advice. The last time I spoke to him was when we agreed the withdrawal agreement. It was when I spoke to two former Prime Ministers, as a matter of courtesy, to inform them what had been negotiated with the European Union.
