Retail Sector

"I am really pleased to have the opportunity to speak in this debate on the retail sector because it is hugely important to my constituency, where 23%—nearly a quarter—of jobs are in retail. That is 8,000 jobs and the highest percentage of retail jobs in any constituency across Great Britain. …..."

"I recognise what the hon. Gentleman says. There are jobs in different areas, but that does not take away from the fact that we need these jobs as well as all those others in the sector.

As I said, the Government’s industrial strategy barely mentions the retail sector, with only …..."

Written Question
UK Notified Bodies
Wednesday 6th December 2017

Asked by: Liz Twist (Labour - Blaydon and Consett)

Question to the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy:

To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, what steps the Government is taking to ensure UK notified bodies continue to operate effectively after the UK leaves the EU.

Answered by Margot James

We recognise the valuable role that third party testing plays in giving business, consumers and the public confidence in products on the market and we have been engaging with manufacturers and testing bodies across the country to understand their concerns.

Through the EU Withdrawal Bill we will convert the body of existing EU law into domestic law with the aim of providing maximum legal certainty and confidence for citizens, consumers and businesses.

We want to agree a deep and special partnership with the EU that is based on the fundamental beliefs we share in free trade and high regulatory standards. The future relationship between the UK and the EU with respect to conformity assessment and other compliance activity is a matter for future negotiations.

Answered by Margot James

My Rt Hon Friend the Secretary of State has written to the Chief Executive of Ofgem asking him to advise on what action the regulator intends to take to safeguard consumers on the poorest value tariffs and to consider the future of standard variable tariffs. The Secretary of State will consider further action in the light of Ofgem’s proposals and remains prepared to legislate if necessary.
