Written Question
Coronavirus: Hospitals
Wednesday 27th May 2020

Asked by: Matt Rodda (Labour - Reading Central)

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps he is taking to support UK hospitals during the covid-19 outbreak.

Answered by Edward Argar

The Department is supporting the National Health Service (NHS) so that it can help those who need it the most.

The establishment of the Nightingale hospitals was an unprecedented response to an unprecedented challenge and they provide extra capacity to manage potential surges in demand due to Covid-19.

We have also been greatly strengthened by over 10,000 health professionals who have been passed onto Trusts to deploy; and over 25,000 student nurses and midwives, over 3,000 final year medical students and over 4,000 other health professionals who have started their NHS careers early.

The Chancellor has also set out a package of targeted measures which include a £5 billion emergency response fund to support the NHS and other public services. He has since reiterated that whatever resources the NHS needs, it will get.

Coronavirus: Local Government
Wednesday 22nd April 2020

Asked by: Matt Rodda (Labour - Reading Central)

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps he is taking to support local authorities during the covid-19 outbreak.

Answered by Jo Churchill

The Government stands ready to do whatever is necessary to support councils in their response to COVID-19.

The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government (Rt. hon Robert Jenrick MP) addressed over 300 council leaders in England reaffirming the Government’s commitment to giving councils the support they need to contribute to the national effort. He confirmed a series of practical measures which will give councils greater flexibility to respond to COVID-19.
