Equitable Life

"I never had my pension with Equitable Life, but the right hon. Gentleman makes a good point. Many solicitors, accountants and other professionals invested in Equitable Life. It was popular with financial advisers because it was seen as a safe, steady company, but it turned out not to be, and …..."

Equitable Life

"I agree with most of what the hon. Gentleman says. We have to grasp the nettle because it is becoming ever more important that we have confidence in our pension provision. If we fail to give people that assurance, we risk them not having the confidence to invest in pensions, …..."

Tax Avoidance (HSBC)

"The revelations about HSBC are just the latest in a long line of misdeeds by our banks, which are undermining confidence in the system throughout. Too often, HMRC seems to be on the back foot. The Chancellor said that if it required more resources it would be given them. Will …..."

Monday 12th January 2015

Asked by: Mike Weir (Scottish National Party - Angus)

Question to the HM Treasury:

To ask Mr Chancellor of the Exchequer, what assessment he has made of the number of cases in which officials engaged in verifying the eligibility of applicants for tax credits where issues relating to their single status were an issue did not provide information advising how single status could be established in the last 12 months.

Answered by Priti Patel - Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs

During 2013-14 the total number of interventions carried out on single person tax credit claims with a suspicion of an undeclared partner was 140,923. HMRC amended 28,516 awards as a result of these investigations. HMRC do not hold data on the number of applicants who failed to provide information relating to their single status.

Offshore Wind Developments

"I am not familiar with that case, but it sounds like it was. Offshore wind farms give the opportunity to provide not only clean energy, but employment. That is important for the hon. Lady’s area and mine, and for much of Scotland. That point was reinforced in a report from …..."

Offshore Wind Developments

"Clearly, there is a balance to be struck between the interests of the bill payer and the interests of creating renewable energy. We all have to take that into account. My point is that as well as being clean, renewable energy also produces investment in industrial development and creates jobs. …..."

Offshore Wind Developments

"I am sure that the hon. Gentleman will be gobsmacked to know that I do not agree. I will mention that later. No doubt, he will make his own points on that subject.

When I served on the Energy Bill Committee, I raised concerns about the changeover process from renewable …..."

"We are in danger of having a debate within a debate. I will return to the points I was making on offshore wind, although nuclear power does come into this to some extent. If we are serious about the long-term development of offshore wind, we need clear targets and commitments …..."
