Jobcentre Plus Offices: Closure

"Contrary to the Minister’s assertion, it was confirmed to Glasgow’s MPs at meetings with DWP Ministers and representatives before Christmas that the Department used Google Maps. The Government have stated that they are consulting in areas where service users would be forced to travel more than 3 miles or for …..."

"It is a pleasure to serve under your chairmanship, Ms Dorries. I thoroughly congratulate the hon. Member for Rutherglen and Hamilton West (Margaret Ferrier) on her fantastic speech and on securing the debate.

"The hon. Lady is making a very interesting point and I wonder if she shares my concern. "It is a pleasure to bring up the rear this evening, Madam Deputy Speaker. From listening to today’s debate, it is not entirely clear whether this Government’s—or their Back-Benchers’ —arrogance or ignorance on the crucial area of social security is more astounding. MPs, MSPs, devolved Governments, experts, civil society and …..."

Written Question
Jobcentres: Glasgow
Wednesday 11th January 2017

Asked by: Natalie McGarry (Independent - Glasgow East)

Question to the Department for Work and Pensions:

To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, what assessment he has made of the effect of local public transport networks on people's ability to access alternative jobcentres in the event that Jobcentre Plus office closures in Glasgow go ahead.

Answered by Damian Hinds

The department is committed to retaining an accessible Jobcentre network and continuing to serve customers in all areas of the country. Travel time by public transport is one of a number of factors that have informed our proposals for our future Jobcentre network. Where we propose to close a Jobcentre, customers will be advised on alternative Jobcentre locations, taking into account access to public transport. The equality analysis and public consultation will help establish people’s ability to access services from alternative Jobcentre locations.
