"Let me start by paying tribute to the hon. Member for Workington (Mark Jenkinson). He has put a lot of effort into this Bill, and he has obviously cared about this issue for a very long time. The way that he has approached this Bill has been gratefully appreciated by …..."

Education (Careers Guidance in Schools) Bill

"Only on Wednesday I had a conversation with the hon. Member for Stoke-on-Trent North (Jonathan Gullis) about his Bill, for which he, too, is an enthusiastic salesperson. The Opposition are certainly open-minded to that suggestion. I have already met the hon. Member for Stoke-on-Trent North and will stay in touch …..."

Education (Careers Guidance in Schools) Bill

"I do not think this is the debate in which we should go down that path—[Interruption.] Well, I am happy to compare the two records. We are entering an era in which the school day is reducing at a time when there should be more experience. Just …..."

Education (Careers Guidance in Schools) Bill

"Let me finish the point; the hon. Lady cannot intervene on a response when it was her own intervention in the first place—I know that enthusiasm is rewarded in this place, but one must not get ahead of oneself. It is not possible to make the argument that there is …..."

Written Question
Teachers: Training
Wednesday 8th September 2021

Asked by: Peter Kyle (Labour - Hove and Portslade)

Question to the Department for Education:

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, with reference to page 4 of the Department's Realising the potential of technology in education: A summary report, published in April 2019, how many teachers have participated in training courses on the use of education technology since 2019.

Answered by Nick Gibb

The EdTech Demonstrator programme, launched in April 2020, provided peer-to-peer support on making the best use of technology to support remote teaching during the COVID-19 outbreak. Over 4,000 schools and further education colleges received support as part of Phase 1 of the EdTech Demonstrator Programme, with over 11,000 accessing live weekly webinars and tutorials.

891 schools and further education colleges have now registered for Phase 2 of the EdTech Demonstrator Programme, which aims to bridge the gap from crisis response to long-term sustained use of technology.

Written Question
Schools: Internet
Wednesday 8th September 2021

Asked by: Peter Kyle (Labour - Hove and Portslade)

Question to the Department for Education:

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, how many schools lack full-fibre internet connectivity (a) nationally, (b) regionally and (c) by local authority.

Answered by Nick Gibb

According to data from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), 14,259 schools are in postcodes that either currently have access to full fibre internet, or are in areas of proposed commercial build within the next five years. Around 2,000 schools are in the scope of DCMS’ Gigabit Hubs programme and will have access to gigabit capable connectivity by 2025. These figures do not account for schools that have access to fibre through a private leased line arrangement to enable gigabit capable connectivity.
