Question
to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, with reference to the Answer of 28 March 2017 to Question 909524, on nature conservation, what discussions he has had with the Department for International Development on using UK aid to protect endangered species abroad.
Answered by Mark Field
Combating the illegal wildlife trade (IWT) is a policy priority for the FCO. We work closely with Defra (as the policy lead), DFID and other government departments to bring the full range of HMG levers to tackling the trade. These three departments will co-host an international IWT conference in London 2018. A ministerial steering group which includes Ministers from Defra, DFID and FCO, has been set up and meets to dicuss the IWT.

Question
to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what role his Department has in the protection of endangered species abroad.
Answered by Boris Johnson
Illegal wildlife trade is a serious threat to the world’s endangered species and combating it is a priority for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. It is a serious criminal industry worth more than £6 billion a year. It is fuelled by corruption and undermines good governance and the rule of law. We work with our overseas network, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Department for International Development to secure global action to combat it.

Question
to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:
To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, what steps he is taking to protect the Arctic environment and its eco-system.
Answered by Alan Duncan
The rapid changes taking place in the Arctic pose immense challenges for Arctic States as well as for neighbouring countries including the UK. The Government is actively engaged in protecting the Arctic environment and ecological system. The UK promotes greater understanding of the Arctic through international scientific collaboration and the development of policy based on sound science. The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) works with other countries to build an understanding of the threats and opportunities posed by climate change. The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) works with the Arctic Council to protect migratory bird species across the Arctic and the UK. The UK's leading role in reducing human-generated greenhouse gas emissions is vital to safeguarding the Arctic environment, as is our engagement in key international organisations. A £16 million research programme funded by NERC over the next 5 years will focus on the effects of changes to sea ice cover on the marine eco-system in the Arctic.
