Written Question
Travellers: Caravan Sites
Thursday 21st September 2017

Asked by: Ranil Jayawardena (Conservative - North East Hampshire)

Question to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government:

To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, what assessment he has made of the effectiveness of legislation regarding travellers' illegal encampments.

Answered by Lord Sharma

The Government is concerned about unauthorised traveller encampments and the effect that they can have on communities. Local authorities and the police have a wide range of powers that enable them to take action and the Government wants to see them working together to address this issue. A summary of the powers is published on the Government’s website at: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dealing-with-illegal-and-unauthorised-encampments

Public Sector: National Identity
Thursday 23rd February 2017

Asked by: Ranil Jayawardena (Conservative - North East Hampshire)

Question to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government:

To ask the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, with reference to page 18 of the Casey Review, published in December 2016, what the Government's policy is on introducing an oath of allegiance to British values for public office holders.

Answered by Marcus Jones

My Rt Hon Friend, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government has made clear he will be studying Dame Louise Casey’s Review of integration and opportunity closely.

As part of those considerations, we will consider carefully Dame Louise’s recommendation that British values be included in a new oath for those in public office.

The Government will bring forward a new Integration Strategy in the Spring.
