Written Question
NHS: Uniforms
Tuesday 18th January 2022

Asked by: Robert Largan (Conservative - High Peak)

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, whether the Government plans to introduce a nationally standardised uniform in the NHS in England.

Answered by Edward Argar - Shadow Secretary of State for Justice

At present, each trust decides their own uniform specification locally. However, NHS Supply Chain, with NHS England and NHS Improvement, issued a consultation paper in April 2021 on the introduction of a national uniform, with 82% of staff responding in favour. NHS Supply Chain and NHS England and NHS Improvement are exploring a national approach to standardising the purchasing and design of uniforms. Trials of uniform designs are ongoing at a range of acute and non-acute National Health Service trusts across the country.

Breast Cancer: Research
Thursday 6th January 2022

Asked by: Robert Largan (Conservative - High Peak)

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, what steps the Government is taking to support research into secondary breast cancer.

Answered by Maria Caulfield

The Department invests £1 billion per year in health research through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). The NIHR’s cancer research expenditure has risen from £101 million in 2010/11 to £138 million in 2019/20. The NIHR is supporting over 800 cancer studies through its Clinical Research Network. This includes 20 studies for women with secondary breast cancer.

In partnership with Cancer Research UK, the NIHR is jointly funding a network of Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres across the country. These centres are implementing the discovery and early-phase clinical testing of new anti-cancer treatments including immunotherapy.

NHS: Uniforms
Thursday 30th December 2021

Asked by: Robert Largan (Conservative - High Peak)

Question to the Department of Health and Social Care:

To ask the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, how many uniforms have been in use in each NHS trust in each of the last five years; what the total cost of uniforms was to (a) the NHS and (b) each NHS trust in each of the last five years; and how many different types of uniforms have been used in (a) the NHS and (b) each NHS trust in each of the last five years.

Answered by Edward Argar - Shadow Secretary of State for Justice

The information requested is not collected centrally.

Uniforms are workwear and are typically purchased directly by trusts who contract with a number of different suppliers. NHS Supply Chain and NHS England and NHS Improvement are developing a project to adopt a national approach to standardising the purchase of uniforms.
