Whilst we are aware of Mr Lanning’s denial of entry into Israel, we have not raised this matter with the Israeli authorities.​

Question to the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, whether the Government plans to create an Antarctic Ocean Sanctuary.

The UK is an active member of the Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and is committed to establishing a representative network of marine protected areas around Antarctica. The UK led the proposal for the South Orkney Islands Southern Shelf Marine Protected Area, which was the first MPA agreed by CCAMLR in 2009. The UK also strongly supported the designation of the Ross Sea region MPA, agreed in 2016. The UK is a co-proponent of the proposals to establish MPAs in the Weddell Sea and East Antarctica, and will be strongly advocating their adoption at the 37th CCAMLR meeting in October 2018.

The Foreign Secretary, my Rt Hon. Friend the Member for Uxbridge and South Ruislip (Mr Johnson) has had discussions with a number of counterparts on the important issue of multilateral nuclear disarmament. The UK Government firmly believes that the best way to achieve a world without nuclear weapons is through gradual disarmament, negotiated using a step-by-step aproach and within the framework of the Nuclear non-Proliferation Treaty.

The UK plays a full and active role in the UN First Committee on disarmament and international security. We are considering nearly 70 resolutions covering the whole spectrum of First Committee activity working with other States to prevent proliferation and to make progress towards multilateral nuclear disarmament.
