Northern Ireland (Executive Formation etc) Bill

"May I put it on the record that my party agrees with the DUP on the issue? There may well be some degree of consensus on a pragmatic reform to take into account the need to respect the coronation and respect the elections in Northern Ireland. I hope that that …..."

Northern Ireland (Executive Formation etc) Bill

"Members will be pleased to know that I will be extremely brief. I will touch on a few points.

First, I will not repeat the arguments for amendment 10 given that I mentioned them on Second Reading, but I invite the Secretary of State or the Minister to respond to …..."

Northern Ireland (Executive Formation etc) Bill

"I want to press the Minister on that point. I fully accept his point that the legislation being open-ended is not desirable in any sense, but, equally, we are seven weeks away from the 18 January deadline. If he is genuinely telling us that he believes we will have a …..."

Written Question
Schools: Construction
Wednesday 16th November 2022

Asked by: Stephen Farry (Alliance - North Down)

Question to the Northern Ireland Office:

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, whether it is his Department’s policy that Fresh Start agreement funding allocated to support shared and integrated education can be spent beyond 2026 if work on specific new school build programmes has already started.

Answered by Steve Baker

The Government remains committed to the Fresh Start Agreement, which offered £500 million in capital funding over 10 years to shared and integrated education capital building projects and shared housing schemes.

The Agreement reflects the Government's sincere belief that greater integration within education is an essential aspect of the reconciliation process in Northern Ireland.

The Government continues to work with Northern Ireland Departments on funding arrangements and projects under the Agreement.

"I am grateful to the hon. Member for his intervention. It did take the use of the d’Hondt method in councils to get diversity moving, although the council in question, which has been in the news somewhat—rather controversially—over the past number of months now has an Alliance mayor, so hopefully …..."

I also want to address the points about Polish, Lithuanian and other languages needing greater attention. It is important …..."
