Article 50.3 of the Lisbon Treaty sets out that a Member State’s exit from the European Union may be deferred if “the European Council, in agreement with the Member State concerned, unanimously decides to extend this period.”

This extension would allow time for all relevant parties in the UK and in the EU to undertake a meaningful and inclusive dialogue with their citizens, and consider, negotiate and build a mutually beneficial future relationship, in whatever form that might take.
