The Government’s plans to introduce compulsory ID checks at polling stations should be stopped immediately. We believe this is a gross violation of civil liberty, upon which the presumption of innocence is based, by forcing citizens to "prove themselves" in order to exercise the right to vote.

The government should, therefore, promise the following:
(i) an immediate cross-party review into the legal, political, socio-economic and moral consequences of compulsory ID checks.
(ii) legislation against wider ID measures, such as compulsory photo ID cards, with full constitutional protections.
(iii) indefinitely postpone compulsory ID checks at polling stations for the upcoming May 2021 local and mayoral elections and all subsequent UK elections.
