All slaughter should be monitored to enable prosecution and forced closure in the event of animal abuse. We are told that government inspectors monitor CCTV in abattoirs but not told how much footage is inspected or whether abuse is prosecuted. All footage should be monitored by an independent body.

At present, footage is required to be retained for 90 days and provided to inspectors on request. We believe this is not sufficient to ensure that welfare standards are met. All slaughter should be inspected. Abattoirs that do not adhere to strict animal welfare guidelines should be closed.
