Nearly 60,000 hectares of forests have been cleared - an area the size of Chicago.

A 2018 report by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) said there was no evidence that illegal fires had been set by palm oil companies. However the BBC obtained a copy which found “evidence beyond reasonable doubt” that 30,000 hectares of forest had been destroyed in breach of FSC regulations.
