In order to meet the zero emissions target by 2050, it is entirely possible that with another 10 years of R&D investment in improving the environmental impact of Internal Combustion Engines(ICEs) that there could equally be a case for retaining them, since they offer numerous advantages over BEVs.

A huge investment in infrastructure is needed to enable wide deployment of BEVs, along with ongoing inducements to purchase.
The Government should review the proposed ban on ICEVs and encourage the industry to pursue all options including BEVs, ICEVs, synthetic fuels etc in order to meet the emission target. This would provide a much smoother and practical transition. There could even be the possibility of powering existing ICEVs using synthetic fuels which would give a “double whammy”.
