Asylum seekers do not have permission to work while awaiting a decision on their claim. They can end up living in squalid, unsafe slum housing conditions along with some facing racial & hate crime experiences. The long queues and long waiting hours at the reporting centre another factor in part of making life harder for them. A key concern highlighted is their mental health, with NGOs noting that asylum seekers are more likely to experience poor mental health than the local population.
