Only an Act of the UK parliament can bring the status of Gaelic into line with the status enjoyed by Welsh under the Welsh Language Act 1993 as currently amended, and so enable residents and businesses in Scotland and Northern Ireland to use the Gaelic Languages in transactions with departments of the UK government and in mainstream economic activity.

Routine transactions currently facilitated in Welsh include applications for passports, submission of tax returns and company reporting.
