Since 1990, four sitting Prime Ministers have resigned, because of successful challenges to their position as Leader of their Party or their inability to discharge the duties of the role.

Their successors have been chose by the political party in power, without any public vote. This does not sit comfortably with the UK’s claim to be the home of Representative Democracy.
