The Government needs to urgently provide more funding and resources to HMRC.

HMRC should be provided with more staff and funding to ensure the smooth launch of Making Tax Digital for Income Tax from April 2024. HMRC need to urgently allocate more resources into answering queries from the public and enrolled agents and ensure the backlog of outstanding post is cleared.

Members of the public and enrolled tax agents are experiencing delays for responses to queries. In December 21, HMRC closed their VAT and Corporation Tax phone lines on 3,10 and 17 December to help reduce the large volume of post that had built up.

MTD for Income Tax has been delayed to April 2024 for sole traders and landlords, many years after intended. We fear the timetable is prone to further delay and changes to basis periods for sole traders have not been adequately thought out.
