Ensure households housing refugees do not lose the 25% single person discount

People who live alone (or are treated as living alone) can claim a 25% discount on their Council Tax. Some will have spare room(s) that could be used by refugees. The Government must take action to ensure that council tax discounts are not affected by housing refugees.

The Government has said that council tax discounts will not be affected if someone sponsors and host a Ukrainian household in their home, but refugees have not been added to the list of people disregarded for the purpose of council tax, so it is not clear how this will be achieved.

We ask the Government to add refugees to the categories of people who are disregarded for Council Tax purposes, like children, students and live-in, unrelated carers.
