The national speed limit is 70mph (112.7kph). There is no need or justification for vehicles made for use on the roads to be able to reach speeds in excess of 80mph (128.7kph). The impact of high speed collisions are often devastating.

All new vehicles sold for use on the roads in the UK should be limited to 80mph, with exceptions for emergency services.

By reducing the speed vehicles can attain the roads should be safer. The average speed of collisions should be reduced. Drivers of stolen vehicles should be less able to outrun the police. The impact on emergency services and NHS treatment costs could be reduced.
