The Government should not introduce a tracking-based ‘telematics’ road tax system, as recommended by the Transport Committee. The Committee suggested that fuel and vehicle excise duties could be replaced by a "mechanism that uses telematic technology to charge drivers according to distance driven".

The Government should guarantee AGAINST the use of any type of road tax using tracking/telemetry. The Government should respect the privacy of drivers and not introduce this massive state surveillance. It will be too expensive to implement and could be abused in the future. There are alternatives which reportedly do not have these risks, such as basing on vehicle mass or value instead of pay-per-mile systems. Pay-per-mile would unfairly penalise those who commute or travel for work. https://publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm5802/cmselect/cmtrans/789/summary.html
