Provide maternity leave and pay for pregnancies terminated after 20 weeks

Currently eligibility for statutory maternity leave and pay only begins after the 24th week of pregnancy if the baby is not born alive. Maternity entitlements should be offered to parents in situations where a pregnancy is terminated after the 20-week scan for medical reasons.

My partner had to end our pregnancy with our baby boy James due to his kidneys failing. If we had continued with the pregnancy his quality of life would have been poor needing dialysis and transplant. Because this happened after the 20-week scan and before 24 weeks of pregnancy she lost all rights to maternity entitlements which could have been used as time to recover physically and mentally.
