Increase the threshold at which child benefit is repaid from £50k to £60k

Child benefit must be repaid when an individual earns over £50k. The amount to be repaid increases on a sliding scale of 1% for every £100 up to earnings of £60k at which the full amount is repaid. I propose that the lower threshold is increased to £60k and the upper threshold to £75k.

When the high income child benefit charge was introduced in 2013 the higher rate tax threshold was £42,475. This was £7,525 lower than the £50k threshold.

Now the higher rate tax threshold is £50,270 - above the £50k threshold at which child benefit must be repaid. This has not increased in line with the tax thresholds or with inflation, which is currently at the highest rate in decades.

It is only fair that the child benefit thresholds are increased in line with the tax bands and inflation.
