Do not introduce Death by Dangerous Cycling offence or cyclist number plates

It has been suggested a Death by Dangerous Cycling offence and new requirements for cyclists to have licence plates will be introduced. We want a commitment this will not happen. Instead, the Government should be supporting increased walking and cycling, and protecting vulnerable road users.

A 2020 report by PACTS shows that in 2019, 305 pedestrian deaths involved cars while 5 pedestrian deaths involved bicycles and 48 cyclists were killed by cars. The overwhelming evidence suggests that motorists pose the greatest danger to cyclists and pedestrians. Many cyclists hold third party insurance. We believe these proposals are impracticable, unenforceable and could lead to increased aggression from motorists towards cyclists who are already vulnerable on the roads.
