Create an independent regulatory body for MPs like other professionals

We ask the Government to create an independent body to regulate the work and conduct of MPs. In the same way that doctors must register with a regulator to practice medicine, MPs should have to register with a regulator to work as an MP, membership of which should be paid through their salaries.

The independent regulator should have powers to investigate MPs' activities including how they serve constituents and their attendance in Parliament. The regulator should set minimum standards. If these standards are not met MPs should be sanctioned or if necessary removed from office. If removed this should trigger a by-election. No one should be an MP if they don't meet the standards for staying on the register.

The current systems in place to monitor MPs conduct include the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, the MPs Code of Conduct and the Committee on Standards. We believe these systems are inadequate when it comes to holding MPs to account and that a new system is needed.
