Fund a national programme to provide allotments and access to orchards for all

We want the Government to provide significant funding to enable local authorities to improve food security and public health by offering everyone without domestic growing space access to a free allotment, and make orchards containing fruit and nuts trees available to all.

Around 1 in 8 British households do not have a private garden with many more having access to just a small or concrete space unsuitable for food growing. Meanwhile almost 3 million rely on food banks, which often don't provide fresh produce.

Increasing the availability of allotments while filling streets, parks and other common land with fruit and nut trees should help reduce food poverty, improve public health and national resilience to the effects of climate change while increasing arboreal carbon capture. An awareness campaign should be used to encourage uptake.
