We believe that the deployment of a UN peacekeeping mission could significantly help in alleviating the current crisis. Their presence could not only deter violence but also ensure that the world is accurately informed about the ground realities in Balochistan.

We believe that the people of Balochistan are relying on the international community to stand with them in their fight for justice and peace.”

Government Response

Tuesday 9th January 2024

We regularly engage the Government of Pakistan at the highest levels on the need to respect human rights and uphold the rule of law, including in Balochistan.

Pakistan is an FCDO human rights priority country. We regularly engage the Government of Pakistan at the highest levels on the need to respect human rights and uphold the rule of law.

The UK strongly condemns any instances of extrajudicial killings or enforced disappearances. We urge states to fully investigate any allegations, prosecute those responsible and provide justice to victims and their families.

The decision to authorise and deploy a UN peacekeeping mission can only be made through the UN Security Council, with formal approval required through the adoption of a Security Council resolution. Each UN peacekeeping mission requires both a commitment by the parties to a political process and the consent of the host state. The conditions are not currently present for the deployment of a UN peacekeeping mission.

The UK will continue to urge the Government of Pakistan to guarantee the rights of all people in Pakistan, as laid down in the Constitution and in accordance with international standards.
