Fund Rent payments for Working Care Leavers in Supported Accommodation

We think care leavers aged 18+ in supported accommodation should have their rent funded if they are working or on apprenticeships. They are encouraged to not be NEET yet we think the current system punishes those trying to become independent and may force some into poverty.

We think these young people are expected to become independent while being penalised for working. Many on low-paid apprenticeships or entry-level jobs lose some of their income to rent, which may leave them worse off than if they were unemployed. We think this system punishes ambition and discourages work.

We think care leavers deserve genuine support as they transition into adulthood. We urge the Government to fund their rent payments and allow them to work or do apprenticeships without facing unaffordable rent charges.
