If new infrastructure damages existing active travel paths, mandate building of adequate alternatives.
Integrating active travel (e.g. cycle lanes, footpaths or crossings) into larger transport projects can promote physical activity and reduce strain on the NHS, help reduce congestion on roads and save CO2. Long distance walking and cycling routes can contribute to domestic tourism, and pedestrians and cyclists often spend more per head in local businesses than drivers.
