Compel residential care homes in England to publish their tariff of room charges

We urge the Secretary of State to use their powers under the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2014, to compel residential care homes in England to publicly display an itemised tariff of fees for rooms and service charges, very similar to those displayed in hotels.

Under consumer protection laws, businesses offering accommodation in England, Wales and Scotland must display a price list, including itemised information in brochures or websites, stating prices inclusive of compulsory service charges. This requirement currently applies to hotels but NOT residential care homes. We believe this omission limits competition and creates opacity in prices, which could allow the exploitation of vulnerable residents and their relatives by care homes.
