Introduce a hand signal for pedestrians to indicate crossing at zebra crossings

Include in the Highway code a clear hand signal for pedestrians to indicate they are intending to use the zebra crossing. We think it would help motorists with clearly understanding the intentions of pedestrians at point of crossing; similar to cyclists indicating when turning at junctions.

We think introducing a hand signal for pedestrians into the Highway code could save lives and save cost to the NHS. It could make it easier for drivers to gauge the intentions of pedestrians and help to share responsibilities more equally, reduce risk, and increase road safety. It could also strengthen social road user partnership through short and constructive interactions like signals.
