Include the Royal Family, Household & Duchies in the Freedom of Information Act

Legislate to bring the Royal Family, the Royal Household, the Duchy of Lancaster, and the Duchy of Cornwall within the scope of the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2000. We think this would help to modernise constitutional transparency, safeguard privacy and increase trust in the British Monarchy.

Many parts of the monarchy receive financial support from the government, and carry out public functions. Yet they are outside FOI, and much information is secret by law. We think bringing them within FOI – while protecting personal data and security – would improve value-for-money scrutiny, prevent conflicts of interest, increase trust and transparency in an institution many of us support. We believe that if public money is used, there must be public accountability.
