The Government recognises the significant economic and environmental potential of rail freight. GBR will therefore have a statutory duty to have regard to any rail freight target set by the Secretary of State or by Scottish Ministers. The Government has committed to the target of at least a 75% growth in rail freight by 2050 and, as a milestone towards that target, more detailed targets for 2040 will be announced shortly.
