Local highway authorities can, using section 74 of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991 and regulations introduced in 2012, charge utilities for works that overrun. For example the maximum charge on the most significant parts of the road network is set at £5,000 for each of the first 3 days and then £10,000 for each subsequent day. The Department for Transport does not collect data on the amount collected by each local authority.
