As per the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974 (SOLAS), the automatic identification system (AIS) carriage on board and continuous operation at sea is already mandatory for commercial vessels.

The Merchant Shipping (Safety of Navigation) Regulations 2020 transpose the above SOLAS AIS regulations in United Kingdom.
