To ask the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, what steps her Department is taking to ensure that consumers who are victims of data breaches receive adequate service and compensation from the companies responsible.
We take both the protection of personal data and the right to privacy extremely seriously. The Data Protection Bill is going to make our data protection laws fit for the digital age in which an ever increasing amount of data is being processed. The measures outline in the Bill are designed to support businesses in their use of data. It will empower people to take control of their data and support UK businesses and organisations through the change. It is always the company's responsibility to identify when UK citizens, including its employees, have been affected as part of a data breach and to take steps to reduce any harm.
