I have been closely following the situation in Tunisia. I am of course concerned at the reports of violence and looting that occurred at some protests last week. But the vast majority of protesters, thousands of ordinary Tunisians, demonstrated peacefully, including on the anniversary of the country’s 2011 revolution, on 14 January. Addressing the issues underlying the Tunisian people’s concerns - unemployment, economic opportunity and regional disparities - through investment and economic reform, is the best way to ensure stability. The UK will continue to support Tunisia in doing so.
