A feasibility study into the potential for new and improved cycle routes in the HS2 corridor was commissioned in 2013. The Department has made the outputs from this study available to relevant highway authorities. These include a volume of potential designs for additional cycle links between sites of interest in proximity to the route of the railway. Authorities are encouraged to incorporate these into their Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans where appropriate.

The Department recently allocated £30m to Local Authorities along the Phase One route for them to spend on road safety. It is for local authorities to determine their local priorities, but the Department has encouraged them to consider funding cycling projects where appropriate.
