Question to the Department for Transport:

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what steps he is taking to ensure all public transport providers fulfil their duty under the Equality Act 2010 to be disability accessible.

The government’s vision is for disabled people to have the same access to transport as everyone else so they can travel confidently and easily.

Most transport operators have a duty under the Equality Act 2010 to make reasonable adjustments to enable disabled people to access their services, and enforcement of this is a matter for the Courts.

Accessibility requirements and enforcement mechanisms vary by transport mode. Where government has responsibility for enforcement, it works proactively to identify and eliminate non-compliance. Where local authorities and/or regulators are responsible for enforcement, the government seeks to raise their awareness of the importance of accessibility, for example by publishing best practice guidance.
