We regularly discuss the importance of respect for 'One Country, Two Systems' and Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy with representatives of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Chinese Government. The Prime Minister discussed this issue with President Xi and Premier Li during her visit to China from 31 January to 2 February 2018.

The former First Secretary of State and Minister for the Cabinet Office, the Rt Hon. Damian Green MP, raised the issue with the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam, during her visit to the UK from 20-22 September 2017.

It is essential for continued confidence in 'One Country, Two Systems', both in Hong Kong and internationally, that Hong Kong continues to enjoy, and is seen to enjoy, the high degree of autonomy and the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Basic Law and guaranteed in international law by the Joint Declaration.
