Question to the Department for International Development:

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development, what recent estimate she has made of the number of Rohingya refugees crossing the Bangladesh-Burma border; and what assessment she has made of the capacity of refugee camps in Bangladesh to cope with the number of refugees entering that country.

The UN estimates that 1,000 people a week are still crossing the border from Burma to Bangladesh. Existing refugee camps are already overcrowded. In light of the imminent monsoon and cyclone season we are encouraging the Government of Bangladesh to reduce the population density of the existing camps by allocating additional land that is at lower risk of flooding and landslides, and to put evacuation plans in place including to safe places such as cyclone shelters.
