Work Capability Assessment: West Midlands

Question to the Department for Work and Pensions:

To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, how many cases there have been in which people have been declared fit for work and then went on to win their appeal against her Department in (a) Coventry and (b) the West Midlands in each of the last three years for which data is available.

The Department publishes quarterly statistics on Employment and Support Allowance (ESA): Outcomes of Work Capability Assessments (WCA) which include figures on mandatory reconsiderations and appeals of WCA decisions. These statistics are not currently available to local authority or regional level but DWP statisticians are investigating how to extend the geography information provided. The statistics can be found at the following link:

Table 3 of these statistics covers National figures for appeal outcomes for Fit for Work decisions in initial assessment by month of claim start.
