Question to the Department for Education:

To ask the Secretary of State for Education, what comparative assessment has been made of (a) the cost of the Turing scheme per UK student placement and (b) the proposed cost for the Erasmus scheme per UK student placement.

Over the four academic years from 2021/22 to 2024/25, the Turing Scheme allocated £291.4 million to support 116,902 overseas placements.

The UK will contribute around £570 million to the Erasmus+ programme in 2027, down from the approximately £810 million we would have paid under default terms.

The UK will receive most of that money back to distribute amongst the UK beneficiaries, who will also have the opportunity to compete for grants from an approximately £1 billion central pot directly managed by the European Commission.

Erasmus+ has a much broader scope of activity than the Turing Scheme and provides many other opportunities aside from mobility placements, including funding for international partnership projects that drive innovation and enhance the global reputation of UK institutions.

We expect that over 100,000 people in the UK could benefit from mobility and partnership opportunities from participation in 2027.
